San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office Secures Justice in Tragic Death of Child
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, led by District Attorney Ron Freitas, announces that Dominque Gray, a 31-year-old Stockton resident, was sentenced to the maximum term of 11 years in state prison for one count of voluntary manslaughter (Penal Code 192(a)) by the Honorable Judge Allen Jose.
On April 27, 2022, Jane D. Doe, just four days shy of her second birthday, was brought to St. Joseph’s Hospital unresponsive after failing to wake from an afternoon nap. She was pronounced deceased that same day. Autopsy and toxicology reports confirmed the cause of death as ingestion of a lethal dose of fentanyl. The investigation, conducted by the Stockton Police Department, determined that Gray, the child’s father, recklessly left a fentanyl pill within the child’s reach, resulting in her tragic death.
District Attorney Ron Freitas expressed the weight of the outcome, stating, “Losing a child so full of promise, breaks my heart. This case reminds us how one reckless moment can shatter lives. I’m grateful for the hard work that brought justice for this baby girl, and we’ll keep fighting to protect every child in our community.”
The District Attorney’s Office extends its gratitude to Deputy District Attorney Lesley Scharmann for her dedicated prosecution of the case, as well as Stockton Police Department Detectives Alexander and Cardenas for their thorough investigation.
