CHP Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest and Seizure of 40 Pounds of Methamphetamine

On September 4, 2025, a California Highway Patrol officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 5. Due to the driver's and passenger’s behavior and inconsistent statements, the officer requested his K9 partner conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Jack alerted to the presence of narcotics.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed approximately 40 pounds of methamphetamine concealed in the trunk. The driver, Juan Jesus Munoz-Guzman, was immediately arrested for transportation and possession for sale of more than 10 kilograms of methamphetamine.

On September 8, 2025, Munoz-Guzman appeared in San Joaquin County Superior Court before the Honorable Judge Jose in Department 8B. Judge Jose set bail at $1,030,000 and imposed a Penal Code 1275 hold, requiring a hearing to ensure any bail funds are not derived from drug trafficking.

Munoz-Guzman is scheduled to return to court on September 24, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in Department 8B.

“Every pound of methamphetamine taken off the streets means fewer families torn apart and fewer lives destroyed,” said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas. “Thanks to CHP’s outstanding work, our community is safer today, and we remain committed to standing with victims and protecting neighborhoods from the grip of drug trafficking.”
