On October 14, 2025, in Judge Orcutt’s courtroom, Deputy District Attorney Janet Smith obtained a guilty verdict in the People v. Jones and Garner murder trial.
On March 15, 2022, in Tracy, Justin Peoples stopped at a gas station to get change, where he brushed past Christina Lyn Garner, leading to a violent confrontation with Jeremy Wayne Jones, who stabbed Mr. Peoples multiple times, and Garner, who shot him in the head.
The jury returned verdicts of first-degree murder for both defendants. The jury further found that Jones used a knife in the commission of the murder, and that Garner personally used a firearm in violation of Penal Code §12022.53(d) and was a felon in possession of a gun.
“These verdicts hold the defendants accountable for their brutal actions and reaffirm our commitment to justice,” said San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas. “We thank the jury for their service and commend Deputy District Attorney Janet Smith for her outstanding dedication in seeking justice for Mr. Peoples and his loved ones.”
Garner faces a potential sentence of 50 to life in prison, plus an additional term for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jones faces a potential sentence of 27 to life, plus extra time for being armed during the offense.
Sentencing is scheduled for November 17, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in 8D.
